Cardiolipin organizes respiratory-chain supercomplexes within the inner mitochondrial membrane, and disruption of that organization is associated with reduced electron transport efficiency in published models. SS-31 binds cardiolipin without disrupting the membrane, which makes it a targeted tool for studying that relationship. Laboratory applications include oxygen-consumption and ATP-production assays in isolated mitochondria, reactive-oxygen-species measurement, and preclinical mitochondrial-dysfunction models. Because uptake is driven by lipid affinity rather than a receptor, the peptide behaves differently from conventional ligands and controls should reflect that.
