SS-31 is a synthetic aromatic-cationic tetrapeptide that associates with cardiolipin, a phospholipid found almost exclusively in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
That selective binding is the reason it is studied: it concentrates in mitochondria and allows researchers to examine how inner-membrane lipid organization influences electron transport efficiency and mitochondrial bioenergetics.
For research use only — not for human or animal consumption.
Supplied solely for legitimate laboratory and research purposes. Not for medical or veterinary use, diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of disease.
Analytical values reflect per-lot documentation and appear once a batch is released.
Topics reflect published preclinical and in vitro research. Reference only — not a claim of clinical outcomes.
SS-31 was developed in research at Cornell University as part of a series of mitochondria-targeted (Szeto-Schiller) peptides selected for cationic-aromatic patterning.
It has since become one of the reference compounds in mitochondria-targeted peptide research.
